UK-based Times Online is reporting that Google is developing a mobile phone service that will have the ability to translate speech, from one language to another, on the fly. Google’s hoping to build off of their text-to-text translation engine — which is currently capable of translating 52 languages — and voice search technologies. “We think speech-to-speech translation should be possible and work reasonably well in a few years’ time,” said Google’s chief of translation services. Industry experts remain skeptical, however, about the proposed timetable, “The problem with speech recognition is the variability in accents. No system at the moment can handle that properly,” said David Crystal, professor of Linguistics at Bangor University. “Maybe Google will be able to get there faster than everyone else, but I think it’s unlikely we’ll have a speech device in the next few years that could handle high-speed Glaswegian slang.” It certainly is an aggressive goal, and one we are pretty excited about. We’ll stay on top of this story and report back as more becomes available.

We told you about BlackBerry Application Suite (BAS) Professional back in the day when we first got a copy of the application. Now the crack team at the XDA-DEV forums (via BBLeaks) have scored a copy that anybody can download. Thanks to Wakady for putting it out there.
In case you don’t remember BAS lets you run a virtual BlackBerry OS (4.5 if I remember correctly) on Windows Mobile devices. There do seem to be a few caveats the first being that it looks like this version requires a BES server to work. If I remember correctly BAS was supposed to come out in Professional and Personal version one for BES and one for BIS. Right now only the Professional/BES version has leaked.
Wakady also notes that he installed it on TAEL ROM Standard WM 6.5.1 & runs fine. He could not get past the registration screen without a BES connection.
Anybody with a Windows Mobile device want to give it a spin? You can find it at Mediafire at this link.

Motorola DROID users as a whole are a pretty happy bunch, but after finally getting their first taste of official multi-touch, we can’t help but blame them for wanting a whole lot more. The good news on this front is that Android 2.1 for the DROID will be made available next week, according to Motorola’s Facebook page. Motorola has not detailed what the update will encompass, but here’s what Engadget has been told:
The current test build is Android 2.1 version 1
The browser will have multi-touch
Google Googles is pre-installed
No visual changes to the homescreen or app drawer
Active wallpapers aren’t included, but the fancy widgets that made their debut with the Nexus One are
Most of us probably agree that things like multi-touch in the browser are big news, but we can’t help but eagerly wait to see what all the Negative Nancy’s out there have to say about some of the nifty features that will allegedly be left behind. Regardless, we’ll be sure to give you all a shout as soon as the update starts trickling out.

Michael Gartenberg, Columnist at Engadget and Vice President of Strategy and Analysis at Interpret, posted these three tweets earlier tonight:
Just received a mysterious invite to Google (NSDQ: GOOG) event on Wed. in Mountain View. #google
“We’ll be unveiling some new product innovations and we’d like to invite you to join us” hmmmm #Google
Oops. That Google event is tomorrow not Wed. #oops
Whether or not it’s Android related we can’t tell. Anything Google does is watched by everyone across multiple industries, for good reason too, so at least we’ll see something semi important.

Recently, a line of HTC device with capacitive displays which have been released on America soil have lost their multi-touch capabilities, but this does not seem to be true with the HD2. The HD2, that has been known for some time to be coming to T-mobile USA just became official with a HTC.com and Sticktogether.com page. The information provided on the page is nothing far from what we already know, but from this we know everything that was rumored is now official.
The page shows the HD2 coming with the 16GB memory card that we have known about for some time also including the 1GB internal ROM and 576MB RAM. The page also mentions the devices Capacitive display and does not fail to speak of its “pinch-to-zoom and haptic capability” and don’t forget the 3.5mm headphone jack.
These are all great information that we have already known about, but for the T-mobile costumer(including me) this should be enough details to set your heart on the device.

Well, well, well, look what we have here: an actual HTC Legend. For those that don’t pay particularly close attention to the world of Android, the Legend can best be thought of (though by no means officially) as the successor to the Hero. A device that many of you might remember left us wanting more. Featuring a new design approach which includes an aluminum body as well as a gigantic HTC logo on the rear (HTC is typically conservative when it comes to branding), the Legend also features goodies like an optical trackpad, AMOLED display and LED flash. Our one qualm? We really miss that funky green antenna cover as seen in the initial renders of the device. Anyway, hit the jump to check out the rear of the Legend. We think it may remind you of a very popular phone that came out in mid-2007.

Orange has retained its position as the top mobile broadband provider in the UK, according to a survey by independent research company YouGov. Orange was ranked top for customer services and reliability, while customers also rated Orange’s mobile broadband service top in a further seven out of 15 categories, including ‘ease of use’ and ‘upload speeds’.
Orange offers a selection of mobile broadband and connected laptops in the UK, and in November 2009, made it even easier for customers to access content online by offering two new dongles, the Orange e1752 and the Option 515M, as well as two new laptops; the Asus 1005HGO and the embedded Compaq CQ61, both featuring the operating system Windows 7.
Asif Aziz, Director of Broadband and Home, Orange UK said: “Retaining our position as the top mobile broadband provider in the UK is a great accomplishment which we’re really proud of. This win is recognition of our strong focus on network quality and brilliant customer service and its our aim to build on these, as well as the products and services we offer, to ensure our customers continue to benefit from a high quality user experience.
Orange’s mobile broadband was also ranked number one in YouGov’s Dongle Tracker survey in October 2009.

Our buddies over at picoprojector-info.com have come up with a little gem of an advert (if somewhat wacky) for a new Pico-projector phone in China. The projector module is LCoS-based (the projection module is made by iView), and it supports audio/video/photo files, and also some documents. It’s also a TV receiver. The phone is Quad-band with dual-SIM support. The phone is available now in Japan (at least according to the ad).

The latest version of the HTC HD2 ROMs contain some interesting new apps, including an ereader, but also this new HTC Flashlight app, which makes pretty good use of the super-bright dual LEF flashlights in the monster.
